Cuttyhunk Island Art Residency

In September 2019, I was awarded an art residency on the remote island of Cuttyhunk. It is the outermost of the Elizabethan Islands. I used the time to begin working on a series of upcoming large oil paintings. Cuttyhunk Island Artists’ Residency offers artists the time to focus on their work in a beautiful, remote setting far removed from the distractions of everyday life. An intimate group of twelve visual artists gather on Cuttyhunk Island for eight days to share ideas and learn from each other while working on their individual projects. We invite visiting artists each session to do …

Gallery at FOUR: ARTIST TALK

On Thursday, September 12th, I had a small artist discussion about my more recent work. What came out of the conversation was quite interesting. It is important to my more recent thinking about my place in the world of art. As much as I see the value in explaining my work, it’s far more important that the work inspire thoughts in the viewer. I feel that we have moved towards a place of making art too easy for the viewer because we are expected to talk about every aspect of the work. Isn’t that the job of the curator or …

VERMONT STUDIO CENTER: Artist Residency, February 2018

The Vermont Studio Center was founded by artists in 1984. The location—situated along the banks of the Gihon River in the historic village of Johnson, Vermont—was chosen with the intention of fostering creativity through community, collaboration, and quiet reflection supported by the unspoiled beauty of the northern Green Mountains. Over the last 30 years, VSC has grown to become the largest international artists’ and writers’ residency program in the United States. Our mission is to provide studio residencies in an inclusive, international community, honoring creative work as the communication of spirit through form.

Print Studio @ Fine Arts Work Center: Returning Artist Residency 2017

Last week, I spent time at the Fine Arts Work Center as part of the Returning Artist Residency program.  I have often thought of printmaking as a great way to explore new ideas for painting because the investment of time and materials seemed so different.  My ideas about that are shifting.  As much as I enjoy the freedom to explore, I can’t hep but think that all the work I am doing is part of the process.  The printmaking supports the painting, and vice versa.  I think I have Master Printmaker Vicky Tomayko to thank for that.  Truly an inspirational  artist on …

WASH ALL OVER ME/ OPENING SEPT. 28

Artist Michael Walden presents a collection of paintings exploring the traditional subject of bathing.  It is astudy of the human form in the most intimate of expressions.  Voyeuristic in nature, these paintings move beyond the basic tendency to shy away from the male form and are replaced with feelings of familiarity and comfort. At Bakker Gallery, 359 Commercial Street, Provincetown MA August 28 to September 10, 2015 Visit bakkerproject.com for more info.
